【改訂版】TOEFL Quick Prep：Reading「言い換え問題」「挿入問題」を解説します（TPO8 “Running Water on Mars?”から出題）
以下、過去記事を改訂したものです。
Readingの「言い換え問題」（Sentence Simplification Questions）、「挿入問題」（Insert Text Questions）に苦手意識がある人は問題を解いて解説を読んでください。TOEFL Readingでのスコアアップを願うなら、そのくらいの手間はかけましょう。

今回は、TOEFL iBTの過去問である Quick Prep Vol. 4 のReading問題 2問（言い換え問題と挿入問題）の解説を掲載します。
パッセージのタイトルは “Running Water on Mars?” TPO8からの出題です。
TOEFL iBT Quick Prep Volume 4の4-8ページ “Running Water on Mars?” の問題。
以下の2問、すでに解いたことがあっても、Reading問題解法確認のために是非、解いてみて下さい。
これらの問題では、解答のためにパッセージ全体を読む必要はありません。
では以下、これらの問題に対する解説です。

Q10
Dを選びましたが、正解はBでした。
ハイライトでは、高台はマーシャンの水でなく、地理的動きにより作られたと主張していると理解しました。
B, C, Dどれもポイントは押さえているので、より細かく書かれているDを選びました。
C, Dはなぜ不正解なのでしょうか？
Q10は言い換え問題。
ハイライトの文は以下。
But detractors maintain that the terraces could also have been created by geological activity, perhaps related to the geologic forces that depressed the Northern Hemisphere far below the level of the south, in which case they have nothing whatever to do with Martian water.
> B, C, Dどれもポイントは押さえているので、より細かく書かれているDを選びました。
「より細かく書かれている」ものを選ぼうという視点が解法として間違っています。
言い換え問題の解法では以下のようにお伝えしました。
「※ TOEFL iBTのOfficial Guideでは、このタイプの問題をSentence Simplification Questionsと呼んでいます。その名前の通り、この問題で問われていることは単に言い換える（paraphrase）ことではなく、単純化する（simplify）すること。よって、言い換えられた文は、基本的にもとのハイライトの文よりも短くなります。」

この問題で求められているのは
Which of the sentences below best expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage? Incorrect choices change the meaning in important ways or leave out essential information.
とthe essential informationを最もよく表現したものであり、内容ができるだけ細かいものではありません。
逆に、些末な情報を含む選択肢は正解になりにくいと言えます。
この問題では、選択肢A, B, C, Dすべて
But detractors argue that …
から始まっていますので、その後の「文の構造（SV関係、VO関係等）」に注目しながら判断していきましょう。
まずはAを確認します。
A）But detractors argue that geological activity may be responsible for the water associated with the terraces.
「地質活動は（地形と関連する）水によるかもしれない」
は、ハイライトの文の
…, in which case they have nothing whatever to do with Martian water.
「その場合、火星の水とは関係ない」
に反します。よって、不正解。
ちなみに、ハイライトの文の冒頭
But detractors maintain that
の後の「文の構造（SV関係、VO関係等）」に注目しながら意味を取ると
the terraces could also have been created by geological activity, …
「the terracesはgeological activityによってcreateされたかもしれない」
であり、その後は文の主節ではない修飾語句なので、この内容を含んでいる選択肢が正解になりやすいと判断できます。
その視点からも、ハイライトの文や選択肢の意味理解が不十分であったとしても、Aは不正解になりそうと考えられます。
続いて
B）(But detractors argue that) the terraces may have been formed by geological activity rather than by the presence of water.

この選択肢の
the terraces may have been formed by geological activity (rather than by the presence of water)
の部分は、先ほど確認したハイライトの文の
the terraces could also have been created by geological activity, …
「the terracesはgeological activityによってcreateされたかもしれない」
にそのまま対応しているので、正解になりそうです。
この選択肢は、ハイライトの文の以下のカッコで括られた箇所に触れていませんが
But detractors maintain that the terraces could also have been created by geological activity, (perhaps related to the geologic forces that depressed the Northern Hemisphere far below the level of the south,) in which case they have nothing whatever to do with Martian water.
カッコで括られた箇所は、カンマで挟まれた、より細かな内容になる修飾語句であり、重要性が低い要素なので、この部分を削除して言い換えることに問題はありません。
よって、Bが正解になります。
C）But detractors argue that the terraces may be related to geological forces in the Northern Hemisphere of Mars, rather than to Martian water in the south.
は、rather than to Martian water in the southの部分がハイライトの文と合いません。
なので、不正解。
Cの
… the terraces may be related to geological forces in the Northern Hemisphere of Mars, …
の部分はハイライトの文の
… the terraces could also have been created by geological activity, perhaps related to the geologic forces that depressed the Northern Hemisphere far below the level of the south, …
を意味的にまとめた内容になっています。
the terracesが「createされた」に触れていないので、その点はちょっと弱いと言えますが。
最後に
D）But detractors argue that geological forces depressed the Northern Hemisphere so far below the level of the south that the terraces could not have been formed by water.
これは間違いやすい選択肢だと思います。意味は
「地質の力が北半球を南のレベルよりもずっと低いところまで落ち込ませたので、地形は水によって形成された訳ではないであろう。」
ここは so 〜 that … 構文で、因果関係になっています。
[原因]「北半球が地質の力によりずっと落ち込んだ」
（だから）↓
[結果]「水によって形成された訳ではないだろう」（水はそこまで低下させることができないから）
このような因果関係はハイライトの文の中では成立していません。
ということで、Dも不正解です。
またCでも書きましたが「the terracesがcreateされた」に触れていないので「正解になりにくそうだな」という意識は持ちたいところ。
しかし、問題は
Which of the sentences below BEST expresses the essential information in the highlighted sentence in the passage?
と選択肢の中で、「一番上手く」まとめているものを選ぶことを求めているので、言い換えとしてちょっと弱いものが正解になりえることは覚えておきましょう。
Q13
Cを選びましたが、正解はAでした。
代名詞に注目し、these landscape featuersが前文で述べられているはずと思い、pathの記載があるCを選びました。
Aが正解になる理由を教えてください。
挿入文
These landscape features differ from runoff channels in a number of ways.
でまず注目すべきは、主語These landscape features。
挿入文の前には複数形のlandscape featuresに当たるものがなければなりません。
またそれらのlandscape featuresはdiffer from runoff channels in a number of waysと「いくつもの点において、runoff channelsと異なるということなので、その後は「具体的に」異なる点がいくつも取り上げられると予測されます。
Aに挿入した場合
Outflow channels are probably relics of catastrophic flooding on Mars long ago.
(A) [挿入文] These landscape features differ from runoff channels in a number of ways.
They appear only in equatorial regions and generally do not form extensive interconnected networks.
となり、代名詞の繋がりは
Outflow channels = These landscape features = They（どれも複数形）
で成立します。
またdiffer from runoff channels in a number of waysが示す「runoff channelsとのいくつもの違い」は、Aの後の段落全体で語られています。
よって、Aが正解。
通常の挿入問題同様、この問題は1分以内に正解したいところです。
ご質問をいただいたCですが、Cの前の文
Instead, they are probably the paths taken by huge volumes of water draining from the southern highlands into the northern plains.
の
the paths taken by huge volumes of water draining from the southern highlands into the northern plains
と
These landscape features
はつながるものの、挿入文の後半のdiffer from runoff channels in a number of waysにあたる内容はCの前から語られているので、Cはふさわしくありません。
また、Cの後の文
The onrushing water arising from these flash floods likely also formed the odd teardrop-shaped “islands” (resembling the miniature versions seen in the wet sand of our beaches at low tide) that have been found on the plains close to the ends of the outflow channels.
の主語である
The onrushing water arising from these flash floods
はCの前の文の中の
huge volumes of water draining from the southern highlands into the northern plains
を受けています。
挿入問題の解法では以下のように説明しましたが
> ■の後の代名詞に注目
> ■の後に代名詞（または代名詞と同じ働きをする名詞）がある場合、挿入文にその代名詞と意味的に重なる表現があるか確認する。なければ、挿入文はその■には入らず、そこは正解にならない。
挿入文の中には、Cの前後の
The onrushing water arising from these flash floods = huge volumes of water draining from the southern highlands into the northern plains
に重なる名詞がないため、Cに挿入文が入ると、代名詞の流れを切ってしまうことになるのも、Cが正解にならない理由と言えます。
